About BSD

The Brookhaven School District, where we are “Equipping Students Today for Tomorrow’s Opportunities”, strives year after year to complete a child’s education with the highest of standards. An education that begins with excellent facilities throughout its seven-school system. Many renovations at all of the schools have taken place over the years, including a $13 million renovation and expansion project at brookhaven High School in 2001. The high school, originally built in 1938, is recognized by the Mississippi Department of Archives as true to its Art Deco design and houses one of the most advanced sound and lighting systems of any high school auditorium in Mississippi.


Over the years, the district continues to celebrate National Merit Finalists, graduate hundreds of Mississippi Scholars and complete achievements in all areas of academics and athletics. The Technical Student Association consistently produces students who rank in the top ten in national competition. Class sizes in the elementary   grades  are exemplary. The high school's extracurricular program is outstanding, with district, regional or state championships in every sport. The band and chorus continues to achieve All-Superior ratings. State championships have also been garnered in forensic and science competitions. 


The Mississippi School of Arts partners with brookhaven School District so that MSA students can continue to share in a high school community, taking their mathematics, science, and foreign language classes at BHS. MSA is located on the campus of the former Whitworth College and is a wonderful complement to the community and district.

Our community and its citizens believe that all children and youth have equal moral worth and that education is the concern of everyone. The home, school, church and community share in giving children a firm foundation on which to grow. Since education is a cooperative undertaking, the philosophy of education in the brookhaven School District is:    

- To provide for every child, regardless of ability, environment or status, the opportunity to develop to his/her highest capacity – physically, socially, morally, and spiritually – so that he/she will become an effective member of society, capable and desirous of making a definite, positive contribution to that society.

- To adapt our method of instruction to the individual as well as to the group; to set up goals within the grasp of the pupil’s understanding; to train the mind to think critically; to afford opportunities for practical applications; to arouse curiosity and to stimulate further study. To lead the pupil into active participation in the learning process and to guide and inspire him/her. 

- To continually evaluate, revise and maintain a varied and flexible curriculum which will meet the changing needs of society.

- To take our community into our confidence and discuss, plan and work out together our educational problems under the professional leadership and guidance which we are able to give.
